Three Texans Players Facing Uncertain Roster Futures Heading Into Minicamp
Houston’s OTA period is in the books, and while the work is far from finished — mandatory minicamp begins this week — the reps, rotations, and coaching commentary from the past several weeks have already begun to draw a clearer picture of who might be fighting for their roster life when the 53-man cutdown arrives.
Three names in particular have emerged as legitimate bubble concerns heading into the next phase of the offseason.
Justin Watson | Wide Receiver
Watson’s situation is less about what he has or hasn’t done and more about the sheer volume of competition ahead of him at a loaded position. Houston currently carries roughly a dozen wide receivers on the roster, a number that figures to be cut nearly in half before Week 1.
The math is not working in Watson’s favor. Nico Collins, Jayden Higgins, Jaylin Noel, Tank Dell, and Xavier Hutchinson all project as roster locks — that’s five spots accounted for before the competition even begins. Sixth-round rookie Lewis Bond has drawn attention as a legitimate candidate for the final spot if the Texans opt to carry six receivers, which would leave Watson on the outside looking in entirely.
Watson arrived in Houston ahead of the 2025 season and has yet to establish himself as an indispensable piece of the offense. An injury-shortened stint didn’t help his case, and the emergence of younger options could effectively end what has been a brief and unremarkable tenure.
Cade Stover | Tight End
The tight end room in Houston figures to be trimmed aggressively, and Stover may be the odd man out when the dust settles. Dalton Schultz and Marlin Klein are firmly entrenched in the top two spots. Foster Moreau was brought in this offseason as a priority free agent addition, valued for his blocking ability and veteran presence. And Brevin Jordan — returning from consecutive season-ending leg injuries — has reportedly made a strong impression during the offseason program.
That leaves Stover in a difficult spot. His best path to a roster spot may come through versatility. He has been listed as a tight end-fullback hybrid deeper into the offseason calendar, a designation that could give the coaching staff a reason to find room for him. Without that added dimension contributing genuine value, however, it is difficult to see how he cracks a room that already appears to be spoken for.
Jarrett Kingston | Offensive Tackle
Kingston came to Houston as a mid-season addition last year, but the tackle depth chart has been significantly upgraded around him since then. Aireontae Ersery, Braden Smith, Trent Brown, and Blake Fisher all currently project ahead of him — and Fisher’s own roster standing is not guaranteed depending on how lean the team wants to run its tackle room.
That depth chart reality pushes Kingston well down the list. The one development that could extend his offseason includes reps at right guard with the second-team offensive line, an interior look that hints the coaching staff may be evaluating his versatility as a potential selling point. That kind of positional flexibility can be the difference between a roster spot and a phone call in late August, but as things stand Kingston enters minicamp with significant ground to make up.
Bottom Line
Roster battles at the receiver, tight end, and offensive tackle positions are all pointing toward difficult decisions for the Texans this summer. Watson, Stover, and Kingston each have a path to the 53 — but each of those paths is narrow, and minicamp will likely do more to clarify their fates than it will to save them.
